Gorgeous, perfume laden, old-fashioned roses – my favourite!
A warm apple slice made with this recipe (an apple version with an upside down apple effect from lightly sautéing apple wedges in some butter and brown sugar and spreading them in the cake tin before pouring on the cake batter. I also made it with some rye flour this time.)
The freshly baked aroma of apples and cinnamon mingle with the strong perfume from the roses. A cup of tea and the newspaper to read. All the makings of happiness.

Spice and more 
Rose is my favourite scent and one of my favourite flavours too! I just bought myself a bottle of rose liquor.
I just saw this recipe – for upside down apple cake on PBS- cook’s report – or some such name and was determined to make it until I saw Celia’s upper crust pie and decided to make it instead. The pie went so fast, I hardly had it made and it was gone- but I still have a hankering for this cake! Thanks for posting pictures- it looks so lovely!
And your roses-fabulous! So much prettier than tea roses and the fragrance is incomparable.
I can almost smell those roses. There is nothing quite like them is there…apple cake looks really good- I’m in the mood to bake with apples it being such a wild day here today.
I was going to ask you if you used spelt when I saw the photo, then read it was rye.. 🙂

Oh those photos and the description made me sigh – sounds like a perfect afternoon. The caramelised apple would add a lovely moist buttery finish.
The roses, a slice of that lovely apple slice and a cup of tea would just make my afternoon! 🙂
