Hot election buns
Every year our local school runs a fundraising cake stall on election day since our school is a polling booth. Last year I made sourdough hot (cross) election buns as a bit of a joke. We had fun selling the buns that had a J for Julia or T for Tony on them. We got some funny reactions and were surprised to see that the J buns and T buns were neck on neck for the whole morning. As it turned out it was a rather accurate predictor of the election result. This was particularly surprising given how strongly our electorate leans in one particular direction. The politicians who came to our cake stall steered well away from the end of the table that was generating the laughs and comments.
So this year I had to make Barry and Kristina buns again. Once again the buns told an accurate tale. Move over soccer octopus (actually I think he might have passed away into the big ocean in the sky by now). I was particularly chuffed when I overheard someone buying the buns saying that she had bought them last time and they were fantastic. The first batch were a tad doughy this time – not enough time to rise – so I suspect she might not be back next year. Ah well. We still managed to raise a fair amount of money for the school music program.
