Day of indulgence

August 4, 2009

pavSweet little Sam went all out to cook treats for me for my birthday yesterday. On Sunday evening he stayed up late to make his crepe batter and some lemon butter. The only help I had to provide was to separate the egg yolks/whites for him. Yesterday he got out of bed early and made up a big stack of crepes with lemon butter, strawberries and kiwi fruit and brought it up to me in bed.

And then yesterday after school he made up a pavlova. A near perfect one with just the right balance between crispy crust and soft inside…and made without any help at all! I had mine without cream as you can see in the picture above.

Tara does not like to be outdone by her brother but being smaller she knows and resents her limitations. I suggested that she made some toast for me (the only thing she can “cook” on her own) but she gave that suggestion the scorn it deserved. On Sunday  evening she was really happy when Sam had to go to soccer training and so could not make the cake for the family dinner that he had planned. So she got to make it with a bit of help. It was the chocolate nemisis from the River Cafe Easy cookbook – a very rich, very chocolatey cake that is more like a mousse in texture. Just lots of 70% cocoa chocolate, butter, sugar and eggs.

And then today I go for my training session and find out that I have put on weight instead of losing it. Wonder why?

Oooh I love pavlova! Mostly for the whipped cream and berries 😛

Hey, Happy Birthday! 🙂 Is there anything better than the kids spoiling you all day? And how clever is Sam at only 9 to be able to cook so many wonderful things? Future Masterchefs in training…

Thanks Celia (figjam) – yes it is gorgeous to see how excited the kids get. Sam is surprising us with his culinary ability – recently expanded. Was just pancakes and scrambled eggs for a long time. And the good thing is that he is really enjoying it. He was singing while cooking on Sunday evening which was really so sweet. I hope he hangs on to a bit of that sweetness as the grizzly teenager in him starts to emerge!
Christie – you are so right. It needs the cream. I was trying to be good but should have seen that for the lost cause that it is!

Looks like Sam’s a genius. And Tara is right up there too. Lucky you 🙂
